Retreats in Mexico: coasts, highlands and seasons
On the Caribbean side, Quintana Roo has Tulum, Akumal and Puerto Morelos, with cenotes and Maya sites inland. The Pacific coast is longer and wilder: the Riviera Nayarit, north of Puerto Vallarta, has surf villages such as San Pancho, and further south come Jalisco's Costa Alegre, Troncones and Puerto Escondido. Baja California Sur's East Cape faces the Sea of Cortez, and inland, San Miguel de Allende sits high in the hills of Guanajuato.
Most of the country is driest from about November to April. Both coasts also have a hurricane season, which the US National Hurricane Center dates from June 1 to November 30 in the Atlantic and from May 15 to November 30 in the eastern Pacific. Highland towns such as San Miguel are cool at night in winter, so pack a warm layer.

Before you book
- Ask which airport is nearest: Cancún or Tulum for the Caribbean coast, Puerto Vallarta for Nayarit, San José del Cabo for the East Cape, and León or Querétaro for San Miguel de Allende.
- Between June and November, ask what happens to your booking if a storm disrupts travel.
- If a programme includes a ceremony or a treatment, ask who leads it and how guests are screened beforehand, and check with your own doctor.
