How to choose a retreat as a beginner

A first retreat goes best when the programme suits your level. Every listing on this page says it welcomes beginners or all levels, but the pace still differs: some keep to a few gentle sessions a day, others fill the day from early morning. Read the daily schedule and pick one that leaves time to rest.

A shorter stay is an easy start: a weekend or a week shows you which style, teacher and setting suit you before you commit to something longer. If you have an injury or a health condition, or are pregnant, tell the retreat leader in your booking request. They confirm availability and the final price before anything is charged.

Ask each retreat leader how guests are screened before they arrive, who is present during ceremonies, and what the legal position is where the retreat takes place.
