Where you stay shapes the days. Many schools and ashrams sit around Tapovan and Laxman Jhula, upstream of the town centre, or near Ram Jhula; others are in quieter villages outside the town. Vegetarian food is the norm.

February to April and late September to November are the most comfortable months and the busiest; May and June are hot; the monsoon brings heavy rain from about July into September; and December and January mornings are cold.
