Retreats in India: trainings, retreats and Ayurveda
This page includes 45 yoga teacher trainings, 18 yoga retreats and 8 wellness retreats. They're three different trips. A teacher training is a residential course of three to four weeks that ends in a certificate; a retreat is shorter and gentler, with daily classes and no exams; and an Ayurveda or wellness stay is built around consultations, treatments and a set diet.
48 of the 74 programmes here are in Uttarakhand, the Himalayan state that includes Rishikesh, where the Ganga leaves the mountains. Kerala, in the far south, has 9 programmes here, often with Ayurveda in the timetable. Goa adds beaches, and Rajasthan heritage hotels and desert cities.
North and south run on different calendars. Rishikesh is most pleasant either side of the summer heat and the monsoon that follows it; Goa's season is the dry winter after the rains; and Kerala, with two monsoons, suits Ayurveda in the wet months and the beach in the dry ones.
60 of the 74 programmes here start between $349 and $1,954 per person, and the median starting price is $824. Prices in India usually include a room and vegetarian meals, so the difference between two programmes is mostly the room, the teaching and the treatments.

Before you book
- Check which visa fits: India's official e-Visa site lists short-term yoga programmes, and treatment under Indian systems of medicine, among the purposes of the e-Tourist visa.
- For an Ayurveda stay, ask whether a qualified Ayurvedic doctor sees you, and what you'll be given to take by mouth.
- Ask for the exact address and the transfer time from the nearest airport or railway station.
Frequently asked questions
How long is a retreat in India?
Most often 14 to 57 days: 21 of the 32 centres here offer one of that length. Lengths here run from 3 to 57 days.
When is the best time for a retreat in India?
It depends on the region. In Rishikesh and the north, February to April and late September to November are the most comfortable; May and June are hot, and the monsoon follows from about July. Goa is at its best in the dry winter months. Kerala is warm all year, with monsoon rains from June and again from mid-October.
What is the difference between a yoga retreat and a teacher training in India?
A retreat is a holiday with a daily practice: classes, meditation and rest, for a few days or a couple of weeks. A teacher training is a structured course, usually 200 hours over three to four weeks, with anatomy, philosophy, supervised teaching and an assessment at the end.
How much does a retreat in India cost?
60 of the 74 retreats and trainings in India listed on RetreatBird start between $349 and $1,954 per person, and the median starting price is $824. Most include a room and meals; compare the room type and what treatments or excursions are extra.
Where in India should I go for Ayurveda?
Kerala has the strongest Ayurveda tradition, with treatment centres along the coast and in the hills. Kerala Tourism describes the monsoon month of Karkidakam, in July or August, as the traditional season for rejuvenation therapies. Whatever the place, ask whether a qualified Ayurvedic doctor leads the programme.
