Yoga teacher training in India: what to know

34 of the 45 courses here are in Uttarakhand, the Himalayan state that includes Rishikesh, the town most closely tied to teacher training in India. The coast offers a different pace: courses in Goa run mostly in the dry months after the monsoon, and Kerala, in the far south, often folds Ayurveda into the syllabus.

The hours follow the tiers most schools worldwide use: 200 for a first training, 300 for an advanced course after it, and 50 or 100 for a single subject such as pranayama, yin or meditation. A residential 200-hour course in India typically takes three to four weeks. Here, 28 of the 45 programmes run 20 days or more.

Plan around the weather. In the foothills, spring and autumn are the comfortable months, May and June are hot, and the monsoon brings heavy rain in July and August. Kerala has two monsoons, from June and from mid-October.

• Ask which visa the school's students travel on: India's e-Visa site lists short-term yoga programmes under the e-Tourist visa, but the rules depend on your nationality.
