Rishikesh is a pilgrimage town as much as a yoga one: ashrams and schools share the riverbanks, the evening aarti draws crowds to the ghats, and vegetarian food is the norm. Many schools sit around Tapovan and Laxman Jhula, upstream of the town centre; others are in Dehradun or further into the hills, so check exactly where a course is held before you book.

The foothills have distinct seasons. February to April and late September to November are the most comfortable months and the busiest; May and June are hot; the monsoon brings heavy rain from July into September, when landslides can close mountain roads; and December and January mornings are cold enough to need warm layers for the dawn class.
